Background

The Bangladesh Steels Re-rolling Mills or BSRM was set up in 1952 in the then East Bengal.[1] The company set up a rolling mill in 1952.[2] In 2012 the steel production capacity of the plant was 600 ttpa, which was enhanced to 700 ttpa by 2015.[3] BSRM started its first steel melting facility in 1996 with a capacity of 150 ttpa, formerly called Meghna Engineering Works and now as Steel Melting Works in Nasirabad, Chattogram, Bangladesh.[3]

The BSRM Steel Mills Ltd or SML, a subsidiary of BSRM Ltd started operation in 2016 in Mirsarai with a capacity of 862 ttpa.[2][4]

The company relies on 1.4 million tons of imported steel scrap and remaining sourced locally. The plant also buys direct reduced iron.[3] In October 2020, BSRM announced its plans to install an additional capacity of 500 ttpa at the plant to be operational in mid-2023.[5][6]
