Background

In October 2016, BSRM Steels had announced their plans to set up a melting plant at the Mirsarai plant with a capacity of 430 ttpa of MS billets, to be operational within one and a half year.[1] The plant was established in 2017.[2] The new melting unit began commercial operation on 16 April, 2019.[3]

BSRM Steels Ltd has another melting plant in Nasirabad, Chittagong, Bangladesh, set up in 2010 by BSRM Iron and Steel Co. Ltd with a capacity of 151 ttpa.[4][5] BSRM Iron and Steel Co. Ltd merged with BSRM Steels Limited in 2017.[4]

The company relies on 1.4 million tons of imported steel scrap and remaining sourced locally. The plant also buys direct reduced iron.[6]

On October 04, 2023, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a loan agreement with BSRM Steels Limited (BSRMSL) for private sector investment finance of USD 50 million to fund the construction of an environmentally friendly steel plant, planned by BSRMSL in Mirsharai, Chattogram District.[7] In 2021, BSRM announced plans to invest Tk 1,850 crore for setting up of new bar and wire rolling and expansion of melting unit to enhance the capacity of rolling by 600 ttpa and melting by 250 ttpa. The melting plant is set to enter commercial operation by June 2023.[8][9][10]
