Background on Mine
The 5.5 million ton-per-annum Barjora North coal mine was won at an auction in March 2015 by West Bengal Power Development Corporation, a state-owned company of the State of West Bengal. It was previously mined by Damodar Valley Corporation, an Indian-state-owned company. It was apparently defunct when it was acquired by West Bengal Power in 2015.[7][8][9]
The mine received a fresh environmental clearance in 2018. In 2021, it became operational.
