Background

Banovici coal mine is a surface and underground mine near Banovici in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The surface sections are Grivice and Turija sections, the Omazici is an underground section. After three decades of exploitation, another surface mine section Čubrić was closed in 2011.[5]

The mines are owned and operated by the coal mining company RMU Banovici. The company is listed on Sarajevo Stock Exchange.[6]

Coal from the mine is used to supply Tuzla Thermal Power Plant,[7][8] owned by Elektroprivreda BiH, a public power utility. Coal is also exported to Serbia.[5][9]

The United States Geological Survey from 2017-2018 and the company's website reported production as 1.5 million tonnes.[10][11] H1 2022 production was 753 thousand tonnes, which is consistent with the 1.5 million annual estimate.[5] An article dated September 2022 referred to the mine's capacity of 1.6 million tonnes per annum, having produced 1 million tonnes as of September 2022 since the beginning of the year.[12]

In June 2023, the company was seeking an additional short-term loan of 2.5 million marks (ca USD 137 million), after the recent loan of 5 million marks (ca USD 274 million). At the same time, the management structure of the company was changed after the decision of the government.[13]

A government source from October 2023 stated that the company is in a difficult financial situation caused by poor technological processes and inadequate investment practices in the past. Measures were discussed to address the issue to make sure that RMU Banovici is stabilized.[14]

In January 2024, it was reported that RMU Banoviuci signed a contract with Elektroprivreda BiH to supply about 0.8 Mt of coal in 2024. [15]

Expansion

In 2020 it was announced that the company plans to increase production by 0.5-0.6 million tonnes per annum.[16] However it appeared that the project has not progressed and was considered Shelved. RMU Banovici was also developing a 350MW power plant Banovici power station, but the plans to appear to be on hold, as of January 2023.
