Background

The Corridor pipeline system transports bitumen from the Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP) near Fort McMurray, Alberta to the oil processing and marketing hub near Edmonton, Alberta. Corridor began commercial operations in May 2003, and comprises 1,000 kilometres of pipeline. The pipeline was owned by Houston-based Kinder Morgan, and the Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP) by Shell, Chevron, and Western Oil Sands.

In March 2007 Calgary-based Inter Pipeline acquired the Corridor Pipeline from Kinder Morgan for C$275 million in cash and C$485 million in debt. As a result of the acquisition, Inter Pipeline assumed responsibility for the completion of a C$1.8 billion expansion of Corridor from 280,000 barrels per day to 465,000 barrels per day capacity by 2010.
