Background
In early 2015, Tajikistan's government announced plans for a coal-fired combined heat and power plant (CHPP) in the Ayni district of Sughd province, close to the Fong-Yaghnob Coal Mine. The power plant would reportedly have a capacity of 700 to 1050 MW and operate on local coal.[5][6]
According to reporting from December 2017, Tajikistan was negotiating with China on building the Fon Yagnob power station. One media article stated that the Tajikistan government was seeking funding and a feasibility study for a 600 MW power station.[7] Another source stated that the power station would have a capacity of 700 to 1000 MW and be operated by Barqi Tojik OJSC.[8]
In December 2022, a presentation from the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies listed the Fon-Yagnob CHPP as having a capacity of 600 to 700 MW.[9]
In November 2023, a preliminary report for the UN Economic Commission for Europe said that "phased commissioning" of the power station with a total capacity of 600 MW was expected to start in 2025.[10] However as of April 2024 and December 2024, there was no further news on the project.
