Background

The 630 MW coal-fired power station is owned by Gujarat State Electricity Corporation and its units were started up between 1977 and 1998.[3]

Retirement of units 1-2

Units 1-2 have been offline since 2012, and were formally retired in 2017.[4]

Expansion (Unit 6)

In August 2024, the Gujarat government granted in-principle approval for Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (GSECL) to add an additional 800 MW supercritical unit each to Gandhinagar Thermal Power Station, Sikka Thermal Power Station, and Ukai Thermal Power Station.[5] According to August 2024 meeting minutes from the Ministry of Coal’s Standing Linkage Committee, the committee recommended a coal linkage from Coal India Ltd., and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) had given in-principle approval for purchasing power from the proposed expansions. Gandhinagar’s proposed Unit 6 had an expected commissioning date of March 2029.[6]
