Commissioning of Unit 6

In 2013 Gujarat State Electricity Corporation commissioned unit 6 of 500 MW, the first unit added to the power station since 1985.[3][4][5]

Retirement of units 1-2

In May 2015 GSECL said it was commissioning a feasibility study to replace the power station's two oldest 120 MW units with supercritical technology, extending their life and possibly their size (MW).[6]

The two units were retired in 2017.[7]

Unit 7

In February 2018, Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) applied for a terms of reference to construct a new 800 MW supercritical unit at the site of the Ukai Thermal Power Station. The new unit would replace units 1-3, once they are all retired and dismantled.[8]

The terms of reference for the new unit was granted on September 4, 2018.[9]

Environmental clearance was granted in October 2020.[10]

Planet satellite imagery from January 2019 to January 2022 and January 2022 to January 2023 do not show any obvious new developments at the site. The power station was presumed shelved, but may still be under development.

After having been presumed shelved, evidence from GSECL shows that the project is still moving forward as of November 2022. On November 30, 2022, the half yearly environmental compliance report for Unit 7 was cleared by the Ministry of Environment and Forest for the time period of April 2022 - September 2022 [11]. The report indicated that the Unit had not yet been commissioned, but that development of the Unit 7 expansion was continuing. Progress updates for the expansion included:

  • A letter written to a local waste management to update "expenditure on pro-rata basis as per total dry and wet garbage disposed at Songadh waste disposal site" in August 2022, and
  • Development of the required greenbelt plantation equivalent to 33% of the project area, for which a proposal was sent in October 2022 [11]

As of May 2023, no further documentation of progress toward the commission of Unit 7 was found. Planet imagery from May 2022-May 2023 also does not show any evidence of construction.

A July 2023 report from the Ministry of Coal (India) provided the update that "Super Critical Extension Unit No. 7 (1x 800 MW) at Ukai Thermal Power Plant is expected to be commissioned by May, 2028 and, requested for coal linkage from Coal India Limited." [12]

In April 2024, a tender notice for surveying and soil investigation works was announced by construction company BHEL in preparation for the construction of Unit 7.[13] In June 2024, GSECL floated a tender for the EPC package of Unit 7.[14]

Unit 8

In August 2024, the Gujarat government granted in-principle approval for Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (GSECL) to add an additional 800 MW supercritical unit each to Ukai Thermal Power Station, Gandhinagar Thermal Power Station, and Sikka Thermal Power Station.[15] According to August 2024 meeting minutes from the Ministry of Coal’s Standing Linkage Committee, the committee recommended a coal linkage from Coal India Ltd., and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) had given in-principle approval for purchasing power from the proposed expansions. Ukai’s proposed Unit 8 had an expected commissioning date of April 2030.[16]
