Background

The Geramar III power station is part of a proposed gas-to-power project that also calls for the construction of the Geramar FSRU, which would supply gas to the plant.[8] In 2019, Gera Maranhão submitted an Environmental Impact Report (EIA/RIMA) for the Geramar III power station[9] and received a preliminary license from Ibama, Brazil's environmental authority.[10] As of July 2021, the Geramar III power station and the associated LNG terminal continued to be listed as active projects by the Brazilian government.[11] Geramar III was listed as a participant in Brazil's A-5 national energy auction in September 2021[8] and the LRCE (reserve capacity) auction in September 2022[12], but was not awarded a contract in either auction.[13]

As of April 2023 the Geramar III project appeared to be shelved following a May 2022 court ruling that prohibited construction of the plant on environmental grounds.[14]
