Background

Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau S.A. is one of the Americas' leading producers of long steel, and one of the world's largest recyclers and special steel suppliers.[1] The Gerdau Açominas steel plant in Ouro Branco is the company's flagship Brazilian steelmaking facility, with installed capacity to produce 7.6 million tons of steel per year.[2][3]

Originally known as Usina Presidente Arthur Bernardes, the Açominas plant started operations in 1986.[4] Gerdau acquired an equity stake in the plant in 1997, and the assets of Gerdau and Açominas were merged in 2003 under the name Gerdau Açominas.[5]

Facilities at the Ouro Branco plant were significantly upgraded in 2007 with the addition of a second blast furnace and a second sintering plant. A second coking plant was commissioned the following year.[6]

In late 2019, Gerdau announced that it would invest in a major overhaul of Açominas' aging blast furnace #1 and its associated coking plant in 2020.[7]

The plant's product mix consists of slabs, plates, coiled plates, hot rolled sheets and coils, ingots, blooms and billets, medium and heavy structural shapes, and wire rods.[8] The unit exports its production to more than 40 countries, making it one of Brazil's largest steel exporters.[4]
