Gerdau Cosigua Santa Cruz steel plant (Usina siderúrgica Gerdau Cosigua), also known as Gerdau Aços Longos, Companhia Siderúrgica da Guanabara (predecessor), is a steel plant in Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil that operates electric arc furnace (EAF) technology.

Background

At the beginning of the 1970's, the government-owned Companhia Siderúrgica da Guanabara (better known by its abbreviated name Cosigua) announced plans to build a steel plant on a piece of land near Sepetiba Bay, west of Rio de Janeiro. In 1971, Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau S.A. formed a joint venture with the German company Thyssen A.G., purchasing development rights to the project and immediately beginning construction of the plant. Phase 2 of the plant's construction was initiated in 1974, raising the plant's raw steel production capacity to 545,000 tons per annum. In 1979, Gerdau purchased Thyssen's share of the project and assumed full control of the Cosigua plant.[1][2]

The plant's raw steel production capacity is currently 1.2 million tons per annum.[3][4] The plant's facilities include a mini-mill equipped with a pair of Demag electric arc furnaces[5], a rolling mill, a drawing mill, and a nail and clamp factory. The plant manufactures products for use in the construction industry, including rebar, merchant bars, wire rod, drawn products and nails.[6]
