Background

The Guaíra Araucária steel plant was commissioned by Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau in October 1982 to replace the company's aging Siderúrgica Guaíra mill in nearby Curitiba.[1][2] The original Guaíra plant, built in 1946 and acquired by Gerdau in 1971, remained in operation as a rolling mill until its dismantling in 2015.[1][2]

Equipped with a 70-tonne Lectromelt electric arc furnace (EAF)[3], the Gerdau Guaíra Araucária plant has the capacity to produce 540,000 tonnes of steel billets annually.[4]

The plant was idled for seven years starting in 2014 but resumed operations in the second half of 2021 in response to improved market conditions.[5][6][7] Gerdau's filings with the US Securities & Exchange Commission for the years ending December 31, 2021 and 2022 both showed the Guaíra unit to be operational.[8]

In May 2023, Gerdau again indefinitely suspended production at the Guaíra plant, citing a dropoff in domestic steel demand and the lower profitability of the Guaíra plant relative to some of the company's other steelmaking units.[9][10]
