Background

The Gerdau Pindamonhangaba steel plant traces its origins back to 1980, when it was founded by original owner Aços Villares S.A.[1] The plant's original crude steel production capacity of 360 ttpa (thousand tonnes per annum) was eventually raised to 620 ttpa.[1] In 2008, Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau acquired a 29% stake in Aços Villares, and in 2010 the two companies announced a merger deal that resulted in Aços Villares being fully incorporated into Gerdau SA.[2][3]

The Pindamonhangaba steel plant is part of Gerdau Brasil's Special Steel division[2][4][5], which produces specialized products including engineering steel, tool steel, forged bars. high-resistance steels, clean steel, high temper steel, and good machinability steel.[2] A new continuous casting facility is scheduled to begin operations at Gerdau Pindamonhangaba in 2022, which will assist in processing crude steel produced by Gerdau's recently reactivated 80 ttpa melt shop in Mogi das Cruzes.[6]
