Background

The Chimbote steel mill began operating under state ownership in April 1958, when Peru's president inaugurated the plant's DRI (iron reduction), steel-making and laminating facilities.[1] The company was privatized in 1996 and passed into the hands of its current majority owner, the Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau, in 2006.[2][3]

In 2008, Gerdau announced plans to increase steel production at the plant from 450,000 tpa (tonnes per annum) to 3 million tpa by 2013.[4] However, as of early 2021, the plant's production capacities for crude steel and rolled products were only 750,000 tpa[5] and 573,000 tpa[2], respectively, and the plant's iron-making capacity of 400,000 tpa had been temporarily idled.[2]

This alliance, which will last for more than a decade, involves part of the energy that will be produced by Enel's next non-conventional renewable energy plants: Wayra Extension wind power plant and Clemesi solar plant.[8][9]
