Background

The steel industry's roots in Pérez, Argentina date back to the 1950s, when Sipar Laminación de Aceros SA began producing finished steel products for Argentina's agricultural sector.[1] In 2005, Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau - Latin America's leading scrap metal recycler[2] and long steel producer[3] - acquired a majority stake in Sipar Aceros.[4] As of December 2020, Gerdau held a 99.99% equity interest in the plant.[5]

In 2017 Gerdau began producing crude steel at the Pérez plant with the inauguration of a new Danieli 75-tonne FastArc™ AC electric arc furnace.[6][7] The plant has the capacity to produce 650,000 tonnes of billets[6][7] and 240,000 tonnes of rolled products[5] annually. Gerdau Sipar specializes in long steel products for the automotive, agricultural, civil construction and home appliance industries.[4]
