Background
The Gevra coal mine is an opencast mine complex with a peak capacity of 49 million tonnes-per-annum (MTPA) in Korba, Chhattisgarh, India.[9] South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India, operates the Gevra coal mine, which opened in 1981. The mine is often referred to as a "mega opencast mine" due to the fact that it, together with the Kusmunda coal mine and Dipka coal mine, produce 95% of coal in Korba — India's biggest coal-producing district.[10]
Throughout its operation, several expansion projects have been proposed and approved for the Gevra mine, which began operation with a production capacity of 6 million tons of coal per year.[11] Some of its more recent expansion projects include a proposal by SECL to expand production to 50 million tonnes in 2016, however this project has since been withdrawn.[12]
An expansion project to increase capacity from 41 to 49 MTPA was approved by the SECL Board in October 2017.[9]
As of 2022, a proposal for a planned expansion of 70 million tonnes is currently under consideration for the Gevra mine.[10] However, protests over land sold for mine expansions are hindering efforts to boost production.[13]
According to a 2022 report by the International Forum for Environment, Sustainability & Technology (iForest), Gevra has a mine life of less than 20 years and could potentially be closed before 2040.[10]
