Background
Gunung Gahapi Sakti was established in 1978 and produced downstream steel products.[1] It was soon merged with steel producer Gunung Raja Paksi.[2] The company has been developing a steelmaking complex in Medan, North Sumatra, comprising a blast furnace with capacity of almost 800 ttpa, as well as sintering plant and hot treatment plant. The plant is being developed through an equal partnership with China’s Nanjing Iron & Steel (Nangang).[3] According to OECD 2022 report, the proposed plant consists of an EAF facility of capacity 500 ttpa.[4] The construction of the project was kicked off in 2014.[5][6]
