Background

Kalyani Steels Limited was established in 1973 producing steel through primary route.[1] Kalyani Hospet steel plant was established in 1998. The plant houses three mini blast furnaces, basic oxygen furnace with multiple downstream steel products manufacturing facilities.[2]

The plant is expanding its production capacity by 500 ttpa using the BOF route and 40 ttpa using the EAF facility, both of which are expected to become operational by 2025.[3] According to a 2014 pre-feasibility report, the capacity of the plant was being expanded to 1400 ttpa in two phases. The first phase involved addition of a blast furnace, a DRI plant, two BOF units and induction furnace and the second phase involved addition of an EAF and related downstream production facilities.[4] The environmental clearance for the proposal was obtained on 19 January, 2016[5][6]
