Background
In 2019, DG Khan Cement Company signed a deal with Sinoma Energy Conservation for upgrades at the integrated Hub cement plant in Baluchistan. The agreement included a 10 MW waste heat recovery unit and a 30 MW coal power plant. No cost of the project or date of completion were disclosed.[1]
The coal unit began operating in September 2021. It reportedly employs a high temperature and ultra-high-pressure (uHPHT) primary reheat thermal system.[2] It is the second coal-fired power plant of DG Khan Cement, the first one Dera Ghazi Khan Cement power station with 30MW of capacity was put in operation in 2016.
The new capacity makes the Hub plant self-sufficient in electricity. However, in its 2022 report, DG Khan Cement states that the plant did not operate to its full potential due to high coal prices in the international market, and the company resorted to Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF), namely municipal waste and tyres, instead of using coal.[3]
DG Cement's 2023 Annual Report reiterated that high coal prices had led the company to fire more alternative fuels at Dera Ghazi Khan Cement power station and Hub Cement power station. The company was also seeking local coal rather than imported coal.[4]
