JSPL Chhattisgarh steel plant, also known as JSPL Raigarh steel plant, is a blast furnace (BF), direct reduced iron (DRI) and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steel plant operating in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, India.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, India:
- Location: JSPL Post Box No. 16, Kharsia Road, Raigarh, Chhattisgarh 496001, India
- Coordinates (WGS 84): 21.922703, 83.347178 (exact)
Background
The JSPL Chhattisgarh plant started operations in 1989[1] and is the largest coal-based sponge iron manufacturing facility in the world.[2]
In March 2013, JSPL announced its plan to expand the Raigarh plant capacity in two phases at at total estimated cost of Rs 24,000 crore. The capacity is expected to increase from 3 mtpa, by 4 mtpa in first phase and by 3 mtpa in second phase.[3]
According to a revised pre-feasibility report dated July 2021, the expansion plan was modified to increase the capacity by 9 mtpa (0.9 mtpa by augmenting existing facilities and 8.1 mtpa by additional facilities).[4]
Workers' Rights
In 2023, JSPL was ordered to pay Rs 20 lakh to each of the families of two workers who died in an accident at the plant in 2020, along with smaller compensation to two more workers who were injured in the blast.
