Background

In 2009, JSPL had begun land acquisition for setting up a greenfield steel plant of 6 mtpa capacity in two phases of 3 mtpa each. Phase I of the project was expected to become operational by 2012.[1] The JSPL Jharkhand steel plant began operating in 2012 under the Jindal Steel and Power Ltd group.[2] The plant contains a 1 million tonne per annum (MTPA) bar rod mill and a 0.6 MTPA wire rod mill.[3] The 0.6 mtpa wire rod mill and 0.6 mtpa bar mill were commissioned in 2010 and 2011, respectively. The steel plant was expected to be fully operational by 2015.[4] The completion of the project was delayed due to land acquisition issues.[5] The plant in 2017 had a finished steel capacity of 1.6 mtpa.[6]

In 2020, the JSPL group announced it was looking to set up a 2-2.5 million tonnes steel plant at the Jharkhand facility .[7] However, according to JSPL's environmental clearance report, which they submitted in 2021, this number has since risen to 6 million tonnes. The expansion will also contain a captive coal power plant.[8] JSPL announced they would be investing Rs 20,000 crore into the expansion.[3][9][10]

As of February 2022, it appears that no environmental damages or accidents have occurred at the JSPL Jharkhand steel plant.

There has been no developments reported on the project. As of September 2023, the plant is still being pursued.[11]
