Background

In November 2019, AP High Grade Steels Limited (APHSL) was incorporated 2019 as a fully owned undertaking of the Government of Andhra Pradesh for formation of a 3 mtpa Steel Plant in YSR Kadapa District.[1] On December 23, 2019, the foundation stone for APHSL was laid at Sunnapuraalla Palle village of YSR Kadapa District.[2] The project was then rejected by SAIL citing feasibility issues. The Andhra Pradesh government continued pursuing the project, which is now being carried forward by JSW group, to be developed in phases.

In December 2022, Andhra Pradesh State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB) gave its consent for JSW Steel Limited's proposal to set up a steel plant in Kadapa at a cost of Rs 8,800 crore. The plant will be developed in 24-30 months: 1 mtpa in the first year, which will be upgraded to 2 mtpa in the second year and finally to 3 mtpa in the third year.[3][4]

The construction of the plant began in February 2023.[5] JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal declared that the plant would use green energy for its operations.[6] In May 2023, JSW reported that they have decided to go ahead with scrap-based electric arc furnace technology for the plant.[7] As of December 2023, JSW had made little progress in the project, other than infrastructure works like approach road, a dedicated railway line and high-tension power and water supply, all at different stages of execution.[8]
