Background

The pipeline was built during the Soviet period to transport gas from Afghanistan to the USSR along the route Khoja Gugerdag-Kelif-Mubarek.[7]

Later, gas was transported to the southern regions of Uzbekistan — to the Surkhandarya region and the southern part of the Kashkadarya region — via the Kelif-Dushanbe and Kelif-Mubarek pipelines, significant sections of which pass through the Turkmen territory. The commissioning of the Shurtan-Sherabad Gas Pipeline eliminated the need for the transit of Uzbek gas through Turkmenistan.[8]

As of September 2024, it is unclear, which segment of the pipeline is operating. In 2020, Epsilon Development Company (USA) conducted a major overhaul of the pipeline in Uzbekistan, which means that the pipeline is operational on the territory of Uzbekistan.[9]
