Background
The Komsomolskaya Coal Mine (шахта Комсомольская) is an operating underground coal mine in the Komi Republic, Russia. It is owned and operated by Vorkutaugol JSC.
Vorkutaugol used to be owned by Severstal, but the company was sold in late 2021 to Russkaya Energiya, whose majority shareholder is Roman Trotsenko.[8] However Severstal was to remain the key consumer of Vorkutaugol coking coal - the terms of the sale agreement include a long-term offtake contract guaranteeing Severstal's supply of raw material.[9]
Komsomolskaya coal mine is the deepest underground mine in Russia operating at a depth up to 1.1km.[10]
Incidents and Safety
In June 2007, 11 miners were killed in a methane explosion at the mine.[11] The mine's operations were subsequently suspended several times due to high levels of methane.[12] In September 2023 the State Technical Supervisory Board (Rostechnadzor) suspended operations at all Vorkutaugol mines. According to the agency, at the Komsomolskaya mine, belt conveyors in one of the mine workings are operated with violations of industrial safety requirements.[13]
Expansion Project
In 2022, the mine had an expansion plan by tapping into reserves which were previously not accessible. The project was approved by Glavgosekpertiza in spring 2022. The project documentation provided for the second stage of construction of the industrial site of the Komsomolskaya mine due to additional exploration of the lower horizon and specification of hard coal reserves as of 1 January 2020. The mine's design capacity is up to 2.4 million tonnes per year.[14][15][16]
As of March 2025, intensive construction work was underway at ventilation shaft No. 4 of the Komsomolskaya mine. The commissioning of this facility is of great importance for the future operation as it will ensure effective ventilation and will allow the planned loads to be reached in the working faces of block 24-s, which unites the unmined fields of the Severnaya Coal Mine. The active stage of work started six years ago and was completed in 2022. At the same time, they began construction of the surface complex, which includes the main ventilation fan building, the shaft headframe building, two hoisting machine buildings, and a fire pumping station. The construction of the reinforced concrete structure has been completed, and the metal frame of the main ventilation fan building was being completed. At the first stage of launch, ventilation shaft No. 4 of Komsomolskaya will operate in the air-exhaust well mode. In parallel, the construction of the surface complex will continue.[17]
Vorkutaugol
As of 2021, Vorkutaugol accounted for about 11% of Russia's coking coal production. Vorkutaugol operates in the Pechora coal basin. The company consists of four underground mines, one surface mine and several auxiliary enterprises. Vorkutaugol delivered 8.8 million tonnes of coal 2021[9], 9.7 million tonnes in 2022[18] aAccording to a media source from December 2021, it is anticipated that the underground mines of Vorkutaugol will be closed in 2030-2036.[19]
2023 coal production of Vorkutaugol declined by 26% and was 7.2 million tonnes.[20] 1H 2024 production was up by 10% reaching 4.2 million tonnes.[21]
