Background

Severnaya Coal Mine (шахта Северная) is an underground coal mine in Khabarovsk Region, Russia.[10] The Severnaya coal mine is owned and operated by Urgalugol JSC, a subsidiary of SUEK.

The mine was expanded from 2019 levels, with production rising from 1.9 Mt in 2020 to 4 Mt in 2021.[11] A new longwall was commissioned in October 2021. Production over 7 months in 2022 reached 2 million tonnes.[12]

The Severnaya mine was mentioned as a high-potential asset in SUEK's 2021 annual report.[13] Another longwall was commissioned in February 2023 with reserves over 4 million tonnes.[14][15] The next 6th longwall was planned for commissioning in December 2023.[16]

Coal from the Khabarovsk mines (Severnaya coal mine, Bureinsky coal mine and Pravoberezhny coal mine) is exported primarily to China and South Korea. The proximity of the assets to the Vanino Bulk Terminal is an advantage. Mines in this region also supply coal to Russian power generation customers located in the Khabarovsk and Primorye regions.[10]

During 2022, Urgaugol coal mines continued to export the entire volume of coal that it could bring to the ports, taking into account the current logistical limitations. The main export markets now are China, Korea and Japan. The new commercial team managed to solve all problems with freight, and now it is not uncommon that the company even lacks coal for exports. The plan is to increase exports in 2023. There is still a strong demand for our coal on the domestic market due to the growth of power generation in Siberia and the Far East.[17] Urgaugol coal mines produced over 10 million tonnes and shipped over 6 million tonnes to consumers, about 4.9 million tonnes were exported to Asia-Pacific countries (in particular to China) and about 1.3 million tonnes were shipped for the needs of the energy sector of the region.[18]
