Background

The Liberty Steel Georgetown plant has had a tumultuous history: it was built in 1969 by a German industrialist named Willy Korf and was owned by several owners, such as the government of Kuwait in 1984 and the International Steel Group in 2004. It was bought in 2005 by Lakshmi Mittal and closed in 2009. After Mittal merged with the other steel company Arcelor, the Georgetown plant was reopened by Arcelor Mittal in 2011, only to be closed again in May 2015.[1]

The mill was idled from 2015 to 2018, when Liberty Steel (a subsidiary of the GFG Alliance) bought the facility, along with several others, for $5 billion, creating 125 jobs.[2] Only one of the EAFs was recommissioned.[3] In 2019, the Liberty Steel group announced plans to invest $25 million into the mill to upgrade equipment.[4]

In April 2020, the mill closed after a drop in demand for steel products due to the coronavirus pandemic, laying off 104 workers out of 200.[5] In October 2021, the Georgetown, SC mayor gave the mill until February 2022 to reopen; otherwise, the company will lose their zoning permit.[6]
