Background

The Libyan Iron and Steel Misrata plant started operating in 1979. It is the largest steel manufacturer in the country. Due to regional political unrest, the plant's production has been fluctuating throughout the years.[1] In 2022, an industrial fire in the direct reduction plant took place that resulted in the death of two firefighters as well as injury of four others who responded to the fire. [2] In 2024, the company announced its partnership with Danieli to construct a new DRI plant with a capacity of 2 million tons.[3]
