Metinvest Ilyich Iron & Steel Works (Маріупольській МК ім. Ілліча (Ukrainian)), also known as MMKI; Metalurhichnyy Kombinat; Mariupolskyi Metalurgiinyi Kombinat Imeni Illicha, PRAT; ILYICH IRON AND WORKS OF MARIUPOL, PRIVATE JOINT STOCK COMPANY, Mariupol Metallurgical Integrated Plant Named After Ilyich, Private Joint Stock Company, is a blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) idled steel plant in Mariupol, Donetsk, Ukraine.

Location

The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Mariupol, Donetsk, Ukraine:

Background

Ilyich Iron & Steel Works has the largest sinter plant in Europe, according to GMK Center.[1] Ilyich Iron & Steel Works sells part of its iron ore agglomerate to Azovstal Iron & Steel Works.[1] Ilyich Iron & Steel Works leases state-run Ukrmekhanobr to produce sinter ore.[1]

The plant retired six OHF units, amounting to 2400 ttpa in capacity in 2015, reducing nitrogen emissions by 68%.[2]

In February 2022 Metinvest announced its plans to complete the reconstruction of gas cleaning units of the cast-houses and the stock-houses of blast furnace No. 4 at Ilyich Steel.[3] Additionally, Metinvest completed several major capital projects last year and launched a project to build a new cold-rolled, galvanized and color-coated coil production facility at Illich Steel - with investments expected to exceed US$1 billion. The new Illich Steel project will make it possible to replace over 1 million metric tons of imports.[3]

The plant has been damaged during the invasion of Ukraine and has been mothballed since 2022.[4][5]

According to the head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk National Republic, the plant will gradually resume operations from 2023 to 2025.[6]

As of November 2024, there are allegations of the transfer of the plant to the people of Ramzan Kadyrov, who have allegedly been selling the steel-making equipment from a non-operating plant.[7]
