NLMK Lipetsk steel plant (НЛМЗ (predecessor), Новолипецкий металлургический комбинат, НЛМК Липецк), also known as NLMZ (predecessor), Novolipetsk Steel, Novolipetsk Iron and Steel Works, is a steel plant in Lipetsk, Russia that operates blast furnace (BF) and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) technology.

Background

The plant began operating in 1934, when the first blast furnace was launched.[1] In 1966, the basic oxygen furnace shop was launched at the plant.[1]

NLMK Lipetsk produced 80% of NLMK's total crude steel output for 2018.[2] NLMK Lipetsk and Altai-Koks coke plants operate as part of a single manufacturing network.[3] Coke production is split between NLMK Lipetsk (40-45%) and another subsidiary OJSC Altai-Koks (55-60%).[4] All sinter is delivered to NLMK plants from Stoilensky GOK (also part of NLMK group) and NLMK Dolomit production site.[5][6] Pellets are supplied from NLMK Stagdok facility.[7]

In the third quarter of 2022, production levels at NLMK decreased by 11% due to sanctions.[8] NLMK exports slabs to EU, which are included in the 2024 sanctions package.[9][10] In the first half of 2024, NLMK company's revenue fell by 11%.[11]

In February 2022, NLMK, MMK, and Severstal were found guilty of collusion and hiking up prices for steel products, violating anti-monopoly laws.[12] All three companies agreed on a settlement with the Russian Federal Anti-monopoly Service.[13] NLMK was fined 6.4 billion roubles.[13]

On February 24, 2024 a drone strike caused a fire on the plant.[14] There are no records found on any change in the plant's operations.
