Neelachal Ispat Nigam steel plant, also known as NINL, is a blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) steel plant operating in Jajpur, Odisha, India.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Jajpur, Odisha, India:
- Location: Kalinga Nagar Industrial Complex, DUBURI, Jajpur 755 026, Odisha, India
- Coordinates (WGS 84): 20.998641, 86.019102 (exact)
Background
Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL) was incorporated in 1982 and was developed in two phases. Phase-I involved installation of a blast furnace with a capacity of 1.1 mtpa, commissioned in 2002.[1][2] A Steel melting shop with capacity of 897 mtpa for producing billets along with Continuous Casting Shop, Ladle Furnace, Billet Caster and other auxiliary facilities were installed as part of Phase-II expansion and commissioned in 2014.[1] As of 2021, the company was planning an expansion project to increase BOF capacity by 1000 ttpa.[3]
Tata Steel Limited acquired 93.71% stake in the Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited plant on 04 July, 2022 for INR 12,100 crores. Tata Steel announced that it will restart the 1 mtpa expansion and build a 4.5 mtpa long products mill in the upcoming years and expand its capacity to 10 mtpa by 2030.[4][5][6][7] The plant was closed for almost two years owing to various reasons and restarted operations on 03 October, 2022, nearly 90 days after the acquisition.[8][9]
In 2022, Tata Steel announced its plan to invest up to INR 6,600 crore in NINL to part fund the upcoming expansion plan of the plant. Post acquisition, Tata Steel had focused on restarting the plant and take it to the existing capacity of 1.1 million tonne. In the next phase, the company plans to expand NINL capacity by another 4 million tonnes to take the capacity to 5 mtpa in the interim.[10]
