Nippon East Japan Works (Kimitsu) steel plant (東日本製鉄所君津地区, 东日本制铁所君津地区), also known as Kimitsu Works (Kimitsu Area), East Nippon Works Kimitsu Area, is a steel plant in Kimitsu, Chiba, Japan that operates blast furnace (BF) and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) technology.

Location

The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Kimitsu, Chiba, Japan:

  • Coordinates (WGS 84): 35.360912, 139.881953 (exact)

Background

The construction of the plant began in January 1962. The plant began operation in 1965.[1] The plant closed one out of its three blast furnaces in 2016.[2] In April 2024, the Kimitsu plant temporarily suspended production at some of its blast furnaces in the plant on the back of operational issues.[3]

As part of the company's Carbon Neutral Vision 2050, the company is planning the demonstration of its COURSE50 technology before 2030, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 30% in its BF-BOF operations.[4] A 12 m3 test blast furnace was constructed for testing COURSE50 technology with a target of achieving 30% reduction in CO2 emissions. In a test conducted in May 2022, 22% reduction in CO2 emissions were achieved. Testing in November and December 2023 confirmed an emissions reduction of 33%.[5]

In December 2024, Nippon Steel announced that it achieved a carbon emission reduction of 43% in the test furnace at East Nippon Works Kimitsu Area, in a test conducted between November and December 2024. The emission reduction was achieved by improving the heat balance inside the blast furnace during the use of heated hydrogen when increasing the reduction with hydrogen instead of carbon.[6] The large-scale demonstration test using BF#2 is scheduled to begin in fiscal year 2026.[2]
