From Global Energy Monitor

Background

Nippon Stainless Steel Co. Ltd (NSSC) was launched as the largest general stainless steel manufacturer in Japan following the integration of a part of the steel sheet business contained within the special stainless steel business of the former Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, the steel sheet business contained within the stainless steel business (steel sheets, steel pipes, and tubes) of the former Nisshin Steel Co., Ltd., and the former Nippon Steel & Sumikin Stainless Steel Corporation.[1] In October 2024, Nippon Steel Corporation (NSC) and NSSC, a wholly owned subsidiary of NSC, announced their merger with NSC as the surviving company and NSSC as the dissolving company, effective as of April 1, 2025.[2]

Nippon Stainless Steel Yamaguchi Works (Shunan Area) was established in 1958.[3] The plant operated three electric arc furnaces (EAF) with a combined capacity of 1300 thousand tonnes per annum (ttpa).[4][5] One of the EAFs was idled since March 2024. However, as of November 2024, the company is seeking government support under the GX promotion act to upgrade and restart the furnace.[5][6]
