Background

The Nucor Steel Gallatin plant began operating in 1995. It was previously owned by Dofasco Inc. and Co-Steel Inc., then Gerdau SA and ArcelorMittal; Nucor purchased the mill in late 2014 from Gerdau and ArcelorMittal for approximately $780 million.[1]

Upgrades and Expansion

Nucor Steel Gallatin is currently undergoing upgrades to increase capacity from 1.452 MTPA to 2.72 MTPA.[2] This expansion was announced in 2017 and comprised of a $650 million investment.[1] It was expected to be completed by mid-year 2021 but was delayed until 2022; the expansion started operations in July 2022 with plans to scale up to full capacity throughout the year.[3]

In March 2021, Nucor announced it would also be building a new tube mill in Kentucky near its Gallatin plant for $164 million. They expected the new will to be operational by 2023.[4]

Environmental Compliance

In 2000, the plant (then owned by Dofasco and Co-Steel) paid around $1.4-million to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to clean up its emissions and air pollution.[5]
