Background
The Optimus Steel Beaumont plant began operating in 1976 and was operated by Cargill Inc until 2004, when Gerdau acquired the plant (along with four long products mills and four downstream facilities) for $266 million.[1] The plant was then bought by Optimus Steel in 2018 for $92.5 million.[1][2] More than 90% of the facility's output is made from recycled steel which has been recovered from automobiles, steel structures, ships, household appliances, and other sources.[3]
In 2020, Optimus Steel announced it was planning a $40 million expansion to build a new steel wire product line at the Beaumont facility.[4]
In October 2021, five injuries were reported at the Beaumont plant following a crane accident.[5]
