Background
History
Republic Steel Canton was originally established as Berger Manufacturing Co. in 1886.[1] Republic Steel was acquired in July 2005 by Industrias CH, S.A de C.V. (ICH), a steel producer and processor based in Mexico City.[2]
From 2017 to 2018, Republic Steel invested $12 million into upgrading the plant to increase production.[3]
In 2020, the plant idled one of their electric arc furnaces, decreasing production.[4]
Environmental & Safety Compliance
In 2014, the Republic Steel Canton plant agreed to pay a $2.4 million to fix safety hazards as part of their agreement with the Occupational Safety and Hazard Association (OSHA), following several violations.[5]
In 2017, the Republic Steel Canton plant faced a $279,578 penalty for several occupational hazards after more than seven workers were exposed to excessive levels of lead. An employee also suffered severe injuries after being hit by a large machine that was not properly locked down. Canton residents also made complaints to the Environmental Protection Agency because of the damage caused by dirt and dust - presumed to come from the Republic Steel Canton plant. According to the OSHA, Republic Steel has been cited for more than 250 safety and health violations in the past 10 years.[6] It is unclear whether they ended up paying the penalty.
In July 2021, the EPA threatened steep fines for the Republic Steel Canton plant after the facility exceeded the federal limit for lead emissions in the air for the second time in three years. The plant was forced to temporarily halt leaded-steel production in June as well.[7] In August 2021, the company was fined $50,000 for continue to exceed lead emission levels.[8]
Republic Steel was the only manufacturer of leaded steel in Ohio before the company stopped using lead in the manufacturing process in 2022. The use of lead in steelmaking had long raised concerns about potential health hazards, and the company's move was seen as a positive step toward reducing lead exposure in the state.[9]
In December 2022, Republic Steel was fined $2.4 million by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and was ordered to reduce lead emissions at the plant after it was found that the company had violated state environmental laws by emitting high levels of lead and other pollutants into the air.[10]
