Background

Republic Steel Lorain steel plant was originally established as Johnson Steel Street Rail Company in 1895.[1] The plant was also owned by U.S.S. Kobe Steel Co before 2000.[2]

In 2009, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) fined Republic Steel $82,500 for safety violations at the Lorain facility.[2]

In 2011, Republic Steel announced it would be investing $85.2 million in an electric arc furnace. The project was completed and the electric arc furnace went online in 2013.[3]

In 2013, an employee was seriously injured from falling through the roof at the Lorain facility. OSHA investigated the plant and found over 100 total violations, leading to a $2.4 million settlement with Republic Steel that was settled in 2014.[4]

In 2016, Republic Steel idled the plant due to declining demand, although it had been shutting down operations for several years. From 2016 to 2021, Republic Steel has continuously proposed reopening the plant, but as of November 2021, it remains idled.[5]

In 2021, a fire occurred at the facility. No one was injured.[6]
