Background
Ryongdeung Coal Mine, also known as Yongdeung coal mine (용등탄광) is an underground mine in North Pyŏngan Province, North Korea. The Ryongdeung Coal Mine is part of Kujang (Gujang) Coal Mining Complex.[2]
The Kujang is a large-scale coal field with rich reserves located in Gujang-gun, North Pyongyang. It has Ryongdeung Coal Mine, Ryongmun Coal Mine, Ryongsu Coal Mine, Gujang Coal Mine, and Deunglip Coal Mine under its umbrella, and appears to also own a coal mine machinery factory.[3]
The production capacity of the complex is stated at 2 million tonnes per annum.[2]
KDB State of Industry report for 2020 states that production capacity of the Ryongdeung mine is 1.5 million tonnes, but in 2005 only 0.012 million tonnes were produced.[4] In 2017, the mine introduced the water-draining coal mining method through technological innovation and coal production was increased.[4] However, there is no updated production figure.
Coal produced is supplied to the Pyongyang power station.[4][3]
