Background

Ryongmun Coal Mine, also known as Yongmun Coal Mine (룡문탄광 or 용문탄광) is an underground coal mine in North Pyŏngan Province, North Korea.[2] The Ryongmun Coal Mine is part of Kujang (Gujang) Coal Mining Complex which also includes the Ryongdeung Coal Mine as well as Ryongsu Coal Mine, Gujang Coal Mine, and Deunglip Coal Mine under its umbrella, and appears to also own a coal mine machinery factory.[3]

The production capacity of the Kujang complex is stated at 2 million tonnes per annum.[4]

The coal mine consists of 1 to 5 pits and Bongcheon pit. Considering the recovery from flooding in 2005 and 2007, it is assumed that coal mining did not take place until the late 2000s.[5] In January 2009, coal production resumed in the Bongcheon Pit and Pit 1 to 5.[6]

Coal produced is supplied to the Pyongyang power station.

KDB State of Industry report for 2020 states that production capacity is 0.75 million tonnes while estimated annual production is 0.25 million tonnes.[7]
