Background

The Saharpur-Jamarpani Coal Mine is a proposed coal mine in Dumka District, Jharkhand, India.[2]

The coal will supply the 1,320 megawatt (MW) Jawaharpur Thermal Project in Uttar Pradesh, India.[2] In 2015, India's Ministry of Coal allocated the Saharpur Jamarpani coal block to UP Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) for the purpose of fulfilling the coal requirements of several UPRVUNL new projects, including their Harduaganj Extension-II (1x660 MW), Obra C Thermal Power Plant (2x660 MW), Jawaharpur Thermal Power Station (2x660 MW), and Panki Extension Thermal Power Station (1x660 MW).[3]

According to the UPRVUNL website, as of August 2022, the mine is listed as an ongoing project. UPRVUNL states that prospecting work has been delayed due to a number of reasons, including law-and-order issues in Dumka District, Jharkhand, local opposition to prospecting work, and the COVID-19 pandemic.[4]

The company also states it is in the process of appointing NLC India Limited - Neyveli for consultancy & supervisory work for development of the Saharpur Jamarpani coal block.[3]
