Severstal Cherepovets steel plant (Череповецкий металлургический комбинат, ЧерМК, Северсталь Российская Сталь Череповец), also known as CherMK, Cherepovets Steel Mill, is a steel plant in Cherepovets, Vologda, Russia that operates blast furnace (BF), basic oxygen furnace (BOF), and electric arc furnace (EAF) technology.

Location

The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Cherepovets, Vologda, Russia:

Background

The first crude iron from a blast furnace was produced in 1955, and the first steel was produced in 1958. Subsequently, the steel plant turned into one of the largest enterprises in Russia with a powerful blast furnace, basic oxygen furnace, and open hearth production, electric steel-smelting shops, and facilities for the production of sheet and long products. In 1993, the Severstal company was established with the plant as its core enterprise. In subsequent years, unprofitable open-hearth production was closed.[1] Severstal Cherepovets is part of Severstal's Russian Steel Division along with the Izhora Pipe Mill and Severstal-Metiz.[2]

In February 2022, NLMK, MMK, and Severstal were found guilty of collusion and hiking up prices for steel products, violating anti-monopoly laws.[3] All three companies agreed on a settlement with the Russian Federal Anti-monopoly Service.[4] Severstal was fined 8.7 billion roubles.[4]

In October 2023, Severstal announced plans to build an iron-ore pellet production facility at the premises of the Severstal Cherepovets steel plant, which will allow to retire sinter machines of the Sintering Shop #2 having negative impact on the environment.[5] The company signed a special investment contract to build the pellet plant with capacity of 10 million tonnes per year in June 2024. The project will cost RUB 97 billion and should be commissioned in 2026.[6]

Environmental & safety violations

An accident at the plant caused one death and sustained two employees with injuries in 2008.[7] In 2010, multiple violations of safety regulations were registered at the plant, leading to a few administrative cases.[8] The plant is responsible for 69% of hazardous emissions in the region and more than 90% of emissions in Cherepovets.[9]
