Background
Shiu Wing Steel is the only steel rolling mill in Hong Kong and was founded in 1956. Shiu Wing plant was originally founded as a ship-breaking unit in 1950. the first rolling mill was installed in 1958, followed by the installation of its first electric arc furnace in 1979, which recycled locally sourced scrap. The site of the plant was shifted from Kwai Chung to Shiu Wing in 1989, after which the electric arc furnaces were discontinued.[1][2]
In November 2022, the plant announced its plan to build an electric arc furnace of 700 ttpa of recycled steel to be operational by 2025.[3][2]
