Background

The Shyam Steel Durgapur plant began operating in 1953.[1] It primarily produces billets and TMT. It was formerly known as Sova Ispat Ltd and was taken over by Shyam Steel Industries in 2011. The company was renamed Shyam Steel manufacturing Limited in November 2016.[2]

In April 2021, Shyam Steel announced its intentions to invest Rs 600 crore in expanding capacity at the Durgapur plant.[3] According to the OECD's steelmaking report, these expansion plans were expected to be completed in 2021.[4] In September 2022, Shyam Steel announced that it was expanding the capacity of the plant from 700 ttpa to 1000 ttpa through both brownfield and greenfield expansions at an investment of around INR 2,500 crore by April 2023.[5][6]

Shyam Steel also plans to expand the company's production capacity by 350 ttpa through a greenfield integrated steel plant in Raghunathpur, Purulia, West Bengal by September 2025.
