Background

The Stahl Gerlafingen steel plant began operating in 1918 under the Ludwig von Roll‘sche Eisenwerke company.[1]

In 1996, Swiss Steel AG bought the von Roll company. In 2003, Schmolz + Bickenbach AG and Gebuka acquired the majority share of Swiss Steel AG. In 2006, the company AFV Acciaierie Beltrame S.p.A. bought the plant.[1]

In 2014, an explosion occurred at the plant that catapulted blazing hot slag blocks across the plant; no one was injured.[2]

In 2021, Stahl Gerlafingen AG said it intended to invest 95 million Swiss francs in the plant by 2026, which would institute the latest green technology.[3]

In February 2022, AFV Acciaierie Beltrame announced that the Stahl Gerlafingen AG would use only biological oils in its gearboxes and hydraulic systems, reducing the environmental impact of its operations by replacing at least 80,000 liters of mineral oil per year.[3]
