Background
The pipeline was declared a national site on May 10, 2018.[5]
In August 2019, Bulgartransgaz EAD launched "a procedure for Procurement, construction and commissioning of construction site: Gas transmission pipeline to Svishtov." The project was listed with the goal of expanding the gas transmission network of Bulgaria with the construction of a new gas transmission pipeline to the town of Svishtov.[6][7]
As of February 21, 2020, the pipeline was expected to be completed by the end of 2020.[5]
As of May 2020, Bulgartransgaz said it had received six offers for the project tender. Serbia Energy reported that the project would be financed "with part of the proceeds from a grant from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)." EBRD announced in 2019 that Bulgartransgaz would be the recipient of a 10.9 million euros grant from the Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund (KIDSF) in order to partially finance the construction the Svishtov gas pipeline, Panagiurishte-Pirdop Gas Pipeline, and Razlog-Bansko Gas Pipeline.[8] Co-funding by Bulgartransgaz amounts to €8.266 million.[1]
In February 2021 construction on the pipeline began. At that point, commissioning was expected by the end of October 2021.[3] However, after delays, Bulgartransgaz expects the pipeline to be commissioned mid-2022.[9]
