Background

This plant is also called Takoradi 2.[8] The plant is part of the three Takoradi power stations in Aboadze. The power stations include Takoradi (TICO) Thermal power plant, Takoradi (TAPCO) 1 Thermal power plant, and Takoradi (TAPCO) 3 Thermal power plant. In 2000, the Takoradi International Company (TICO), a joint venture between Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA) (90 percent) and the VRA (10 percent), completed construction and began operating the second combustion unit. The plant accounts for 15 percent of Ghana’s installed power production capacity.[9]To increase the efficiency and capacity of Takoradi T2, TICO proposed converting and expanding the plant to operate in combined cycle mode with the addition of a 110 MW steam turbine and generator.[9] In July 2012, the expansion project proposal was approved.[10]The total project cost is approximately US $325 million. IFC provided a US $80 million loan to TICO. The OPEC Fund for International Development provided an additional US $22.5 million for the project, and a consortium of international development finance institutions led by the FMO of the Netherlands provided $330 million in debt financing. TAQA also made a US $25 million equity investment into the project. [11]In 2014, the expansion project was completed. The expansion project increased the generation capacity from 220 MW to 330 MW.[9]
