Background

Tata Steel was established on 26 August, 1907 in Jamshedpur India.[1][2] The company found the ideal site in 1907.[2] The Tata Steel Jamshedpur steel plant has commissioned a 5 metric tonne per day carbon capture plant to extract CO2 directly from its blast furnace.[3] The first steel production in the plant began on 16 February, 1912.[2]

Tata Steel filed for Terms of Reference with the Expert Appraisal committee for expanding Jamshedpur plant capacity in November 2014.[4] In March 2016, Tata Steel received environmental clearance for an INR 1,877 crore expansion project to carried out at the plant. The project is expected to expand crude steel capacity at the plant from 9.7 mtpa to 11 mtpa through debottlenecking of existing facilities at the plant.[5][6]

In January 2025, Tata Steel Jamshedpur's H-Blast Furnace, exceeded 50 million tonnes of hot metal production, making it the first in India to accomplish this feat without undergoing any mid-term repairs.[7]
