Background

Tata Steel Kalinganagar plant was envisioned for a crude steel capacity of 6 mtpa.[1] Phase-I of the project was commissioned in June 2016 and attained designed production capacity of 3 mtpa in less than two years.[2] The current crude steel capacity of Tata Steel Kalinganagar plant is 3 mtpa.[3]

Tata Steel later announced its plan to expand the capacity from 3 mtpa to 8 mtpa in the second phase. Phase-II of the project to expand basic oxygen furnace (BOF) capacity by 5 mtpa at a cost of INR 21,000 crores is under construction.[4][5] Phase-II will involve addition of a blast furnace (BF) and BOF unit, enhancement of existing BOFs and addition of other auxiliary facilities.[6][4] According to Tata Steel Integrated Annual report 2018-19, a 5800 m3 blast furnace is being built at the plant along with expansion of existing steel melting shop.[7] As of July 2023, the expansion was in progress.[8] The company commissioned the First Circuit of the 6 MnTPA Pellet plant and Pickling Line & Tandem Cold Mill Line of the 2.2 MnTPA Cold Rolling Mill complex in 2022-23, as part of the expansion.[9] BF 2 with a volume of 5870 m3 was commissioned in September 2024 at the Kalinganagar plant.[10][11]
