Background
In December 2018, Termopernambuco 2 (also called Termope II) was in the design phase and was intended to connect with the SIN and increase electricity reliability in northeastern Brazil.[5] In addition to the power station the project also consisted of a 500 kV transmission line, gas pipeline, and floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU). In June 2019, the Ministry of the Environment delegated approval of environmental licensing for the power station to the Pernambuco State Agency for the Environment and Water Resources.[6]
In May 2021, officials indicated that Neoenergia had no plans to develop Termopernambuco 2, but noted that the company continued to consider selling the project to a new owner or extending existing energy supply contracts[7][8], which were set to expire in December 2023.[9]
The project was listed as a participant in Brazil's national energy auctions in June 2021[10] but was ultimately unsuccessful, due in part to lack of dependable fuel supply.[11]
