Background
Tikhova coal mine (Шахта им. С.Д. Тихова) is an underground mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia. The Tikhova mine is an underground mine owned and operated by Shakhta Tikhova LLC, whose ultimate parent was KOKS PJSC.[7] KOKS Group also includes the Management Company Industrial Metallurgical Holding (IMH)[7], which was often referred to as the owner of Shakhta Tikhova LLC.[8] In July 2023 the mine was sold to MMK-Ugol, a subsidiary of Magnitogorsk Metallurgichesky Kombinat. MMK said that the Tikhova mine is located "in close proximity" to the Kostromovskaya coal mine, the current mine of MMK. "These mines develop neighbouring sections of the Nikitinsky coal deposit in Kuzbass, which has high reserves of coking coal grade Zh. The acquisition of the Tikhova mine allows for direct synergies between the assets, most effectively optimising operating costs and mining plans within the combined complex," the press release of MMK said.[9][10]
In late 2022, Shakhta Tikhova LLC acquired some of the assets of the assets of the bankrupting Butovskaya coal mine, which was also part of KOKS group.[10]
The mine began operating in summer 2017.[11] The mine's capacity is 1.8 million tonnes and the company planned to increase capacity by 1 million tonnes.[11] The expansion was also mentioned as Phase 2 of the project in Russia's 'Programme for Coal Industry Development up to 2035' released in June 2020.[12]As of September 2022, IMH-Coal's website stated that construction of the surface buildings and the infrastructure of the mine was underway.[13] Fitch Ratings revised the estimate of commissioning of Phase 2 of the mine from 2024 to 2025 (in May 2021).[14] In September 2022, the governor of Kuzbass said that new mine projects are on hold due to infrastructure restrictions of coal exports through the Eastern route of Russian Railways, only the projects that are nearing completion are being finished.[15] Given this announcement and the revised commissioning date in 2024/2025, the expansion project was considered Shelved as of September 2022.
Incidents
In January 2021, there was a release of methane in the mine with a subsequent collapse. 41 miners were evacuated, but 3 miners died.[16] Just a few weeks later another fatality occurred when an electrical worker died.[17] Previously there was another fatality in 2019 when one mine worker died following methane release.[16]In March 2022, the mine's operations were suspended for 6 days due to hazardous conditions.[18]
