Background

Big River Steel is a special "flex mill" that can produce flat products from an electric arc furnace (EAF) and is believed to be one of the most advanced flex mills in the country.[1] One EAF was added in 2017; a new one was added in 2020.[2] According to Big River Steel, the facility is worth $1.3 billion.[3] Big River Steel was bought by the United States Steel Corporation in January 2021.[4]

The capacity of BRS doubled to 3300 thousand tonnes per annum around June 2020 after BRS announced intentions to double production in 2018.[5][6]

In 2021, the facility was awarded by Daimler AG for "the exceptionally sustainable production of steel." According to Daimler, the facility has 70% fewer carbon emissions compared to traditional blast-furnace methods of producing steel. The facility also has a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.[7]
